Melanie has had a lifelong love affair with the written word, inspiring her to open Bluebird Books in November 2012. Since opening Bluebird Books, her reading interests have expanded. While literary fiction is still her go-to genre, she also loves discovering nuggets of insight, a well-turned phrase, and inspiration in creative nonfiction. She also loves to write, walk, hike, bike and create. She is passionate about keeping books in downtown Hutchinson.
Banking is Dell Marie’s job; bookselling is her JOY! You can hear children singing Miss Dell’s name during Saturday morning storytime. Dell Marie also leads Bluebird Books’ Mystery Book Club every fourth Thursday evening.
Chris is the name and books are my game! When I'm not teaching "Reading" at Prairie Hills Middle School, you can find me surrounded with books at Bluebird Bookstore in downtown Hutchinson! As a noted bibliophile, my interests are far and wide! Born and raised in Kansas with a heart for small islands, I might be a little displaced in proximity, because my very favorite summer reads take place on the endearing islands off the East or West coast. I'm a learner for life so I Iove to curl up with a good historical novel. I'm never without a book on my nightstand, end table, purse, car glove box, shower (OK! maybe that's a stretch, but you get the picture!). My motto: READ & RELAX- regularly!
Anita has always loved books. When she and her two best friends moved away from her hometown of Hesston, KS to attend college, the public librarian noticed that not as many books were being checked out! Anita gravitates toward fiction- inspirational fiction, middle-grade fiction, or simply general fiction with a good story and characters who grow as people. Anita's massive "books I want to read" list also includes a fair bit of nonfiction...especially biographies and spirituality. When she's not selling books at her favorite Hutchinson bookstore, Anita might be found preaching at Community Church of the Brethren, singing with the Sweet Adelines, or watching her husband or elementary-aged son in a community theater production.
My passion for reading came to me later in life. I was raised on a farm and had way too many adventures to solve on my own, just in the world around me. Yes, reading did come as a second nature, when I started working at the public library. Now reading has become a first love, having a book with me at all time, just in case there might be a moment to take a glance at it. Anything from inspirational fiction to historical fiction/nonfiction are fair game. Mysteries have become a recent favorite, the "who done it". Tomorrow something else may catch my eye. I have two grown sons, one of which lives in Montana. In my spare time during the school year, I moonlight at two elementary school libraries. Yes, even more books!
Hello! A hearty welcome to you, Dear Reader! I am Kaitlin, lover of tea, literature, and Jane Eyre! Charlotte Bronte's novel has ever been a breath of fresh Eyre (mwahaha) in my life and is a continual source of delight and solace. As a reader my tastes tend to lean towards Classic British Literature and the Gothic, with bursts of Children's Lit in between. Fairytales and Scottish folklore are also quite dear to my heart; Robert Burns is my favorite poet! I'm happiest when it is cold and rainy out- it is the perfect weather for sitting cozy with a mug of tea and a book. When I am not engaged as a magical bookshop enchantress at Bluebird you will probably find me reading, fencing, drinking copious amounts of tea, or planning my next adventure.
I'm a longtime small business bookstore and cafe enthusiast, and I'm thrilled to be a part of the Bluebird team! I lean heavily towards darker fiction, and love a good wild magic to my stories. In my free time I love to read, journal, and spend time in the kitchen baking and cooking. I have two small children in whom I work to inspre a love of books early on with - a 7 year old boy and a 3 year old girl whose overflowing library reflects their mother's addiction to buying children's books. The best part of my job is getting to come in and share my love of coffee and literature with all my regulars and friends here at Bluebird!
"Books are carefully folded forests/void of autumn/bound from the sun" - Saul Williams
"Aim above morality. Be not simply good, be good for something." - Henry David Thoreau
Growing up I always was an avid reader, so a bookstore was a prime choice for a part time job. It wasn't until I started working at Bluebird Books that I realized how much of an impact literature has had on my life. Working at Bluebird not only revived my passion for reading, but gave me a new one, coffee! There is a whole wide wonderful world of coffee that I love to explore. Whenever I travel I always like to visit new coffee shops, but there is no place in the world I would rather be than behind a counter at Bluebird. Books, coffee, bliss! Nothing could be truer!
Visits to the Hutchinson Public Library were a weekly ritual growing up. I remember walking out of the library, struggling to carry my bag absolutely stuffed with books. I could hardly wait to dive into them- I usually started reading the second I got into the car! As a child, Skippyjon Jones sparked my admiration of colorful, wildly active illustrations and spunky Junie B. Jones gave me a passion for the written word. As I got older The Giver series by Lois Lowry and The Sisters Grimm series by Michael Buckley drastically increased my love for books filled with adventure, fantasy, and originality. Working with books and people who value them is truly wonderful.
As a kid, reading was my passion. I spent the majority of my childhood lost in the pages of Nancy Drew mysteries and the Harry Potter series. As life got busy, I found myself reading less and focusing on a newfound love for writing. Thankfully, this season of life has allowed me the free time to rediscover my fondness for reading. While my childhood favorites still hold a special place in my heart, these days I prefer historical fiction, spiritual books, and anything written by C.S. Lewis. Reading aside, I love people, blogging, and all things sweet. I’m so very blessed to work in place where I’m surrounded by all of my favorite things.
Annie is a laughter-filled high school student that loves to play outside. Her favorite hobbies are rock climbing, hiking, and drinking unhealthy amounts of coffee. On rainy days inside, you'll most likely find her reading from one of her all-time favorites, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, and Finders Keepers by Stephen King.
